Civic leaders take a tour of the town

Cllr Bill Lewis and the Mayoress, Sue Lewis, welcomed the dignitaries at the Town Hall before the guests were taken on a guided tour of the town centre's historic buildings and landmarks by the Rugby Town Guides.

The tour included a visit to St Andrew's Church and stops at the Clock Tower, and the statues commemorating William Webb Ellis, Sir Frank Whittle and Rupert Brooke, before ending with a visit to Rugby Art Gallery and Museum, and the World Rugby Hall of Fame.

Cllr Lewis said: "I was delighted to welcome so many fellow mayors and council chairmen to Rugby.

"Rugby has a fascinating history beyond its iconic status as the birthplace of the game, and the civic tour was a perfect opportunity to promote all the town has to offer."

Rugby Town Guides conduct free tours of the town centre every Wednesday and Saturday from April to November.

Tours start at Rugby Visitor Centre at 2pm on Wednesdays and 11am on Saturdays. Places on Wednesday tours must be booked in advance by calling the visitor centre on (01788) 533217.
