Ground-breaking ceremony at council's Pettiver Crescent development
A GROUND-BREAKING ceremony has taken place to mark the start of building work at a council housing development in Hillmorton.
08 stycznia 2014
Representatives from Rugby Borough Council and house-builder Wates Living Space attended the ceremony at Pettiver Crescent on Tuesday (7 January).
The development of 23 new homes, exclusively for council tenants, comprises four one-bedroom maisonettes, 12 two-bedroom houses, and seven three-bedroom houses.
The development includes 43 off-road parking spaces and solar panels on all homes, reducing the cost of energy bills.
The development replaces 14 sheltered flats and 24 flats for single tenants in Pettiver Crescent which had become outdated.
The council's cabinet has approved plans to name the development Sewell Place, in honour of long-serving Hillmorton Ward councillor and former portfolio holder for housing, Bill Sewell, who retired from the council last year.
Cllr Leigh Hunt, Rugby Borough Council portfolio holder for sustainable inclusive communities, said: "The ground-breaking ceremony marks an important milestone for the Pettiver Crescent development, and I am delighted building work can now start in earnest.
"The plans were drawn up to increase the number of family-friendly homes for council tenants, and support a number of other measures the council has introduced to improve the mix of properties available to residents.
"The development also shows the council's commitment to invest in the future at a time when many councils across the country have cut services and sold assets."
Wates Living Space moved on to the site in October, and finished demolition work on the old properties before Christmas.
Stewart Reid, business director at Wates Living Space, said: "We're really pleased to demonstrate our expertise in the creation of quality, affordable homes by commencing work on this new development in Hillmorton for Rugby Borough Council.
"We're on track to complete the scheme in the next 12 months, enabling tenants to move into their new homes by the end of the year."
The council has appointed Kettering-based GSS Architecture to project manage the development.
