Council invests in new green machine for Rugby
THE council has taken delivery of a new refuse collection lorry - the cleanest and greenest on the market.
01 April 2014
The Elite 6, manufactured by Warwick-based Dennis Eagle, features cutting-edge engineering which drastically reduces emissions.
The Elite 6's engine, developed in collaboration with Volvo, was designed to meet the EU's new Euro 6 regulations, which came into force at the start of the year.
The regulations place strict limits on the amount of exhaust emissions permitted from diesel engines, in particular emissions of oxides of nitrogen - or NOx - and particulate matter (PM).
And the Elite 6 not only meets the new regulations - cutting NOx emissions alone by 80 per cent - but also maximises fuel economy.
It also boasts a number of new safety features, including an electronic braking system and stability control, and sensors which alert the driver to nearby pedestrians or cyclists.
Cllr Dr Mark Williams, Rugby Borough Council portfolio holder for sustainable environment, said: "The latest addition to our refuse collection fleet illustrates the council's commitment to being clean, green and safe.
"We're proud of our track record on the environment, and we're on target to cut our carbon emissions by 30 per cent by 2016 - saving £1.8 million.
"The council's pioneering work was recently recognised when we were shortlisted for a LGC Award for energy efficiency, but we're always looking for ways to do more.
"By investing in new, green technology such as the Elite 6, we're readying Rugby for the future and taking care of the environment."
