Get SMART for the summer

THE council has a packed summer SMART programme to keep youngsters active and entertained during the school holidays.
09 July 2014

The programme runs from Monday 21 July to Friday 29 August and features a wide range of sport and arts activities.

SMART sport activities include horse riding, sailing, fencing, archery, basketball and golf.

Qualified instructors lead each activity, with sessions taking place at a number of venues across the borough.

SMART art activities take place at Rugby Art Gallery and Museum, with a number of free sessions inspired by the Gallery's latest exhibition - The Best Is Not Too Good For You.

Free drop-in sessions include interactive storytelling with Annamation (Friday 1 August), Money, Money, Money (Wednesday 13 August), where youngsters can create coin rubbings and make replica Roman coins, and a Drumming Circle (Wednesday 20 August).

In addition to the free sessions, the Gallery has organised a number of art academies, where youngsters can work with an artist to create pop art and ceramics.

During the summer, the council's Play Rangers team also has a busy programme of play sessions planned, with a different theme each week inspiring fun and games at the borough's parks and play areas.

Cllr Heather Timms, Rugby Borough Council portfolio holder for economy, development and culture, said: "I am delighted we're offering such a wide and varied range of activities for the school holidays.

"The SMART programme and Play Rangers have something for everyone, so young people can look forward to a summer packed with activity and creativity."
