Public consultation on improving air quality through planning guidance

The council's cabinet approved the step at its meeting last night (Monday 2 March 2020).

The document is a key and significant piece of work to accompany the Borough Local Plan. It provides detailed advice and guidance to applicants when submitting planning applications and is designed to ensure that new development and extensions to existing property meet the council’s requirement of improving air quality in the borough.  
 
The Air Quality SPD relates to new development in the borough, mitigating against air quality impacts and reducing pollution levels, which in turn will contribute to the national climate change agenda. 
 
When adopted, it will be used by the council to ensure that planning decisions reflect as far as possible its aspiration to achieve that goal.
 
The consultation runs for six weeks from 9 March to 5pm on 20 April 2020. 
 
Cllr Jill Simpson-Vince, Rugby Borough Council portfolio holder for growth and investment, said: "This consultation relates to how we will use our Local Plan to help achieve our twin goals of improving air quality and addressing the climate change emergency. 
 
"This draft document sets out a range of detailed advice and guidance for applicants.
 
“It is important that residents and businesses take this opportunity to inform the SPD and we welcome comments on its content and approach."
